Talking 'Spirit' Posters! Sexy! Love it!

I'll admit that I've never actually been seduced by a movie poster ... until now. Yahoo has debuted four of the standalone female Spirit posters, two of which (Eva Mendes as Sand Sarif and Scarlett Johansson as Silken Floss) we've already seen. Now, as pictured above, we also get to check out Jaime King as Lorelei Rox (and, yes, she definitely rox) and Sarah Paulson as Ellen Dolan. Oh, but that's not even the best part -- when you head on over to Yahoo and move your cursor over the different posters, you get to hear each girl repeat the line scrolled across her face. Oh yes. It's pretty cool ... and pretty hot.

In addition to the talking posters, director Frank Miller has gone live with another blog post. In it, he talks about CGI and the role it plays in the industry, as well how it fits into The Spirit. Working with Stu Maschwitz, Miller says, "Stu Maschwitz, CGI wizard, helped me understand this. Of all people. Sure, Stu had the entire CGI arsenal at his disposal – but he insisted that THE SPIRIT be true to its soul. Even when I wanted to go for an impossible, across-the-city camera move, he balked, saying it would "look digital. And Stu wouldn't let one damn character turn into a "bendie" or digital in any way. Hence my favorite shot – the Spirit leaps onto a water tower, and stumbles, just for a moment. Pure Eisner." I'm diggin' this one so far, and look forward to seeing a lot more of it at Comic Con later this summer.

The Spirit hits theaters on December 25.

PICS: Scarlett Johansson Brings Sexy Back to 'The Spirit'

UPDATE: Images have been removed at the request of the studio.

While she doesn't look all too excited, I'd gladly take this version of Scarlett Johansson as my nurse any day of the week. According to Egotastic!, the above image is part of three test shots of her character Silk N. Floss in Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's classic comic, The Spirit. In the film, Johansson will play a super sexy femme fatale; secretary and accomplice to the Octopus (played by Samuel L. Jackson). The Octopus is a villain who kills anyone unlucky enough to see his face. The Spirit also stars Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt (aka The Spirit); a rookie cop who returns from the dead to fight crime in Central City. Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Jamie King and Paz Vega round out the cast. Check out more pics of Johansson in the gallery below.

The Spirit is scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 16, 2009.

Sarah Paulson Joins Frank Miller's 'The Spirit'

Well, The Spirit may be slutty, as Christopher Campbell pointed out, but he's still going to have a true, cinematic love. The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Sarah Paulson is joining the cast. She will play the police commissioner's daughter, Dr. Ellen Dolan -- who is also, of course, Denny Colt/The Spirit's true love. Paulson is the actress who played Harriet Hayes on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (which got her a Golden Globe nomination), and she's also been in flicks like The Notorious Bettie Page and Serenity. I'm not so sure on this choice, but Gabriel Macht, who is playing The Spirit, is pretty engaging, so maybe he can pull it out of her.

But she isn't the only one added to the cast. Joining the roster that already includes Samuel L. Jackson as Octopus, and Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson as femme fatales, are Dan Lauria, Stana Katic, Johnny Simmons, and Louis Lombardi. Lauria, the pop from The Wonder Years, will play the police commissioner (Paulson's dad); Katic, who plays HRG's recruit Hana on Heroes, will be a rookie cop; Simmons (Evan Almighty) will play a young Denny Colt; and Lombardi (24) will play Phobos, one of Octopus' henchman. This isn't the celebrity cast that Sin City had, so we'll have to wait and see if that helps or hinder the production, which is supposed to begin next month at Albuquerque Studios in New Mexico.

SXSW Review: Diggers

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », SXSW », Magnolia », Theatrical Reviews »

If I described Diggers as being about "four old friends who struggle to (finally) mature in the face of grown-up stresses, miseries and generally unpleasant turns of event," you'd probably respond with something like "Oh yeah, just like 45% of all indie/comedy/dramas I've seen this decade." And you'd be right -- it's not a stunning sense of originality that makes Diggers worth watching; it's the actors, combined with the asset of a surprisingly insightful screenplay that does the job. It's amusing to note that while screenwriter Ken Marino's old State-mates are out banking huge coin writing chaff like Let's Go to Prison and Herbie: Fully Loaded, his first screenplay is a much more personal and low-key affair.

While Diggers would most likely be labeled a "drama," the truth is that there's a lot of solid wit to be found here. It's just couched in between a lot of (surprisingly compelling) melodrama, which helps the 'funny bits' to succeed more often. Plus, Diggers is packed with really strong performances, particularly from likable folks like Paul Rudd, Lauren Ambrose, Sarah Paulson, Josh Hamilton, Maura Tierney and Ron Eldard. Marino gives himself a very juicy central role, but the guy manages to steal every scene he's in, so it's not like it's a bad thing. (His scenes with Ms. Paulson are really quite excellent.) Rudd, Eldard, Hamilton and Marino make for a quietly compelling quartet of old pals; the guys exhibit a clear and casual chemistry that helps the semi-familiar material go down a lot more smoothly.
